More on the subject of color...

Have you ever thought about getting your room color inspiration from your closet? Think about it. You already have the perfect pairing of color and combinations. If you wear it, chances are you may love how it looks in your room. Look at the prints and fabrics you are drawn to while clothes shopping and try visualizing some of those same colors for your paint, fabrics, pillows and rug choices.  Other areas to get inspired by could be the colors of the seasons, for example, with all of the spring things in bloom right now, What are you drawn to? Are you drawn to a specific group of colors? Does the yellow of daffodils make you smile? Choose it for a paint or accent color in a room. How about a picture or a piece of art you can't resist. Look at all of the colors in those things and find a few to use in your room. I do this often when asked to choose paint for clients. I wander their room grabbing pictures or pillows and sometimes even an area rug and then pull out the paint samples or fabrics to begin the selections. This is very effective in finding the right combination of colors for that perspective client because they already like the piece we are using as the inspiration.
You can be inspired to find just the right colors for your home in so many different ways. These are a few that have been tried and true for me and my hope is these ideas will inspire you help get you started surrounding yourself with the color and the things you love.

  1. Great Post Debbie! The funny thing is my house has four of the same red prints in the picture you show! Red is my favorite color~ I never tire of those prints.
My closet has alot of black in it-I'm trying to change that-It's been a slow process. :)

I love how you talk about adding a splash of color like a yellow if someone likes daffodils-It was like you walked into my house. I have a yellow dessert table that is the color of sunflowers. My mom gave it to me, I thought it wouldn't work in my house, that I'd have to repaint it-But once I got it home it fit in perfect!

Thanks again for posting this-It's wonderful.

    Robin~♥

  3. Good tips. I too wear lots of black--Makes me look thinner! Ha! And I love Red too. Not just because I am a Georgia Bulldog fan either, just love those two colors. But as I read this tip and began just browsing through my closet and thinking about the color schemes I had going on in there I was really amazed how I actually have a pallet of all colors....warm colors, bright, soft, bold and etc. Almost every room in my house is decorated differently, with different color schemes, and a different theme all together! Whew, I feel a light has come on! Thanks Debbie and be blessed. Cindy

  12. I am sure you are a little weary cleaning your father's house. I can imagine how that must be. We {my brother, mom, and myself} went through her house right after she had her lung surgery. She did not have a very big house, but we went through everything and labeled everything with stickers and initials. While at first I thought this was strange I realize after she was gone that it was completely perfect. My brother and I didn't have to go through anything of hers. we were just able to enjoy her. Of course she moved up here to live with us so that made the process of closing a chapter a lot easier too. A few months after she passed away, I went down into our basement and started the long process of going through her things that we had here with us. It was hard. Gut wrenching. Joyful. and a task that drained every bit of energy out of me. But I took it daily and realized there were pieces of my mom in each of those containers, clothing, or special moments for her that were just simply that. Special.

So my friend as you go through your father's house I pray that you find the special in it, even through the junk or hardships. I am most certain that you will be blessed through it. I was.

Thank you for praying for us and my gram. It means a great deal to me.

  15. That is one thing that we are pretty good at our house, or at least I am, is color. I love the colors in the picture you posted. I LOVE reds and oranges. That's our colors for dining room and office.

  18. I love the colors you've picked out but I don't think I'd ever get inspiration from my closet! I mostly wear white t-shirts and jeans;-)

  20. The idea of looking at the colors that I wear is so smart.

  21. Very good point. I look bad in some colors and would not want to paint my walls in a color that makes me look bad all the time! I wear a lot of reds and oranges, and my house has some red here and there, but I like the idea of looking more at my closet to get some inspiration. Perhaps I'll add some orange.
    Congrats on your SITS day!

  22. Great Idea! I absolutely love it, ran to the closet only to realize it's as much of a hodge podge as my decorating style! haha maybe that's why I love them both!
